Trip Introduction

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu (Altitude 1400 m)

Nepal Big Mountain Travel believes in persistence and belongingness. On day 1, arrival day, a representative in formal attire with garlands (Mala) and traditional Buddhist ceremonial scarf (Khata) will welcome you. This is a traditional welcoming gesture of Nepalese. The representative will guide you to the hotel. You can wander around the streets of Thamel and explore shops during the late afternoon. Then, a cultural dinner is presented overnight at 3 – star hotel in Kathmandu or similar class.

Day 2: Drive to Barpak (1950 m) via the historic city of Gorkha (7 hours)

After breakfast, you will set off on a 7-hour drive from Kathmandu towards Barpak. It is made sure that you are comfortable on the trip with the appointment of an experienced driver.

To break the monotony like most of the trips, the bus rides through the shortest route possible proving the natural beauty of Nepal like the mountain ranges, flowing rivers and many more. You can view the next possible destinations of your travel in upcoming vacation namely, Kirtipur, Swoyambhunath, etc. You will reach the ancient town of Gorkha where Prithvi Narayan Shah first started the unification campaign of modern Nepal, in the 18th century. After you reach the Barpak, you will stay at a guesthouse for the night.

Day 3: Trek from Barpak to Gai Kharka (2900 m/ 6 hours)

Today is the inception of your trekking. Your day starts with a stunning view of Buddha Himal range since morning. You leave the Barpak village passing through mesmerizing rhododendron and oak forest. The view of the panorama of the Himalayan ranges gets closer as you trek further.  The trail is a lot easier to herders grazing land Gaikharka.

Day 4: Trek from Gai Kharka to Bhaisi Kharka (3800 m/7 hours)

Today is a short but higher in altitude walk. You go to an impressive place called the Sanrung Kharka as well as Rubina La Phedi, the base camp of Rupina la pass so it should be a quite interesting place. You rest at night for next day crossing our main destination of the trip. A huge spacious beautiful lawn greets you.

Day 5: Trek from Sanrung Kharka to Buddha Himal Base Camp (3600 m) via Rupina-La (4720 m) (7 hours)

Today you will move uphill and reach a higher altitude. It is an important day as you reach the Rupina La pass, the main destination of your trek through a tough step up and moving stones trail. This is the highest trail during the Rupina la Pass which is located at an altitude of 4720 m /15,434 ft. Trek ascend to Rupina La summit takes less time than that of Buddha Himal Base Camp. From the altitude, you are sure to view the magnificence of the snowcapped mountains. As you look back, you can feel the great achievement of your triumph.

Day 6: Trek from Buddha Himal Base Camp to Jhong Kharka (2960 m/6 hours)

You start your day catching sight of the sunrise striking the breathtaking mountains. You will reach the spectacular glacier to Jarang 3420m. You will follow the trail to amazing Jong Kharka between of Chhuling Khola and Rebing Khola. The view of incredible Gorkha Himal, Himal Chuli, Bouddha Himal, peak 29 and many other peaks will mesmerize you. You reach your destination to Jhong Kharka.

Day 7: Trek from Jhong Kharka to Nyak (2340 m/ 5 hours)

After you devour your breakfast, you start to walk to your destination. Today you walk through the lush forests and some villages most of part is descending part to get Ngayak Phedi. You follow on the left side of Chhilung Khola passing through Gomna and Serang village to Nyak village.

Day 8: Trek from Nyak to Bihi Phedi (1990 m/6 hours)

Today you will continue from Nyak down an easily exposed track until the trail from Philim comes in from the right. You resume through impressive bamboo forests staying in the left side of the river to Deng (1800 m), inhabited by Gurungs who practice Buddhism. You can interact with the inhabitants for a sense of belonging. There is a good lodge here after the Mani wall. Just beyond Deng cross to the east bank and climb to Rana (1980 m) and resume uphill to campsite Bihi Phedi.

Day 9: Trek from Bihi Phedi to Namrung (2630 m/6 hours)

The trail continues in and out of sparkling canyons, cross the amazing Serang Khola coming from the north and climb steeply again before finally circling into Ghap. The trail follows the upstream of the river through dense forest, few houses and animal shelter. After crossing the river at an impressive spot where it thunders down a narrow gorge, the forest becomes less dense and the trail is fine again. The pleasant walk continues and after a last steep climb, we reach Namrung.

Day 10: Trek from Namrung to Samagaugaun (3520 m/6 hours)

Leaving the beautiful stone houses behind, you will head to Lho (3180m). The climb through the fields is surrounded by stunning views of the mountains especially Ganesh Himal that will stay with you until you enter Lho. The Buddhist culture starts to kick in from here, as you will see beautiful monasteries. Here, you will be able to visit Lama School. You can also visit the Lho monastery if you like to hear the serene chants of monks. The barley fields greet you with great pleasure alongside the wooden houses.

Day 11: Acclimatization day

After eight days of harsh trekking and reaching the altitude of 3530 m, you will start to feel the cold kicking in. This demands the acclimatization day. Today, you will go for a short hike as well as fulfil your trekking purpose of reaching the Manaslu Base Camp (4460 m). From there, you can sit back to analyze the beauty of the mountain Manaslu. You will also be thrilled to walk through the snow to reach there. Then, you descend back to Samagaun where you rest satisfied.

Day 12: Trek to Samdo (3860 m/4-5 hours)

Today you move to the Samdo village, the trail of which turns to the north on the upper region of the Budhi Gandaki River. Following the gradual ascends, you pass through the point of confluence of Larke river and the river formed due to Samdo glacier, also the origin of the torrential Budhi Gandaki to reach to the settlement at Samdo. Before that, you leave the trail to Manaslu Base Camp to our left and view beautiful juniper and birch forests of Kermo Kharka. You march ahead through wooden bridges and steep climb on to the headland from where a large white gateway, Kani can be viewed. Past the Kani, you reach your destination for today and spend the night.

Day 13: Trek to Dharamsala/Larkya Phedi (4470 m/4 hours)

Before you start our climbing, you will gently descend to the river. You will be passing along a glacier followed by beautiful Gorge. Continuing through several Mani walls, you will be reaching Larke Phedi for an overnight stay. Larke Phedi has only one lodge for the basic accommodation of the trekkers. This place is also known as Larke Base Camp. Along the way, you also have the view of Syacha Glacier, grazing land, beautiful forests, lichened stones. You are to keep an eye to catch the chance of glances at the Blue Sheep.

Day 14: Larkya Phedi to Bimthang via Larke la pass (5160 m)

Today is an important day as you attain the highest altitude that constitutes the trek i.e. 5106m. The Larke La pass is a major attraction of the Makalu Base Camp Trek. Today you wake up early in the morning for the rewarding trip that may result to be a little strenuous. Reaching to the north of the Larkya Glacier, spectacular views of Cho Danda and Larkya Peak are acquired. Further, you march across the moraines, make a slow climb initially and steeper into the last section of the Larkey La pass. The view from the top of the pass includes the Samdo Peak and other peaks bordering Tibet, Larkya peak to the southeast, Annapurna region along with several mountains and bit further down to the west for the view of Annapurna II. Following a slippery path, you reach Salpudanda glacier moraine. Past the grassy moraine and rock fall area, flatter valley with azalea bushes, you reach to the sandy plain of Bhimtang.

Day 15: Trek to Dharapani (1,860 m/8-9 hours)

You will leave beautiful Himalayan peaks behind and start descending to Tilje. Continuing further through rhododendron forests will take you to Karache (2,800M); one of the highest cultivated villages of Nepal. Then the path will lead to Gho village where few lodges are available for accommodation. Then, you will descend to the Dharapani where you will be staying for the night so that you can move to the capital tomorrow.

Day 16: Drive to Kathmandu via Besisar/Lamjung (8-9 hours)

Today lies ahead of you with drives back to the capital. You may need to change the vehicle twice to reach Besisahar and then to Kathmandu. You will engage yourself with the views of terrace farming, flowing streams, trees, and fresh air. You can even take a nap in the vehicle to drain out your tiredness. After reaching Kathmandu, you can stroll on the streets of Thamel to shop a souvenir and then go to devour your final cultural cuisine. You stay the night at a 3-star hotel or of a similar class in Kathmandu.

Nepal Big Mountain Travel prioritizes your safety first. Please note that your leader has the authority to amend or cancel any part of the itinerary if it is deemed necessary due to safety concerns. Weather conditions, the health condition of a group member, unexpected natural disasters, etc., can all contribute to changes in the itinerary. The Trekking Group

The trek includes a trekking group of 2-12 members. As a member of the trekking group, you will receive the reward of 1 main guide or leader along with 1 assistant guide for the group of 4 so as to gain as much information from the trekking route possible. The group can be customized as per your need by providing the necessary information. For the details, please refer to the additional information.

The group is under the supervision of the main guide. The directions information and safety concerns are considered by the main guide. This will make your trip more safe and sound. You will get the facility of 1 porter per 2 pax such that if you are tired, the porter can carry your goods for you. However, the load may differ.

Accommodations

You stay at teahouses throughout the trek. All accommodations are on a twin-sharing basis. After the trek, trekkers make use of Nepal teahouses – small hotels for an overnight stay and home cooked meals.

There will be fewer difficulties as the need to cart food and tents are reduced. Quality depends on the number of customers as well as competition. The bakery is the attraction of teahouses where you can choose from various sweet dishes.

You will be able to experience the native and ancient lifestyle. With higher elevations, there are fewer chances of good flushing mechanisms, making the tour more interesting for the challengers. It is highly recommended to use four seasons’ sleeping bag and earplugs for a better experience. You will have facilities of plug points and lighting which gives you unique experience of convenient trekking. You can upgrade your room and hotel with a reasonable extra charge. However, it might be difficult to find a single room at higher elevations.

Meals

The meals also provide you with a slight pinch of cultural taste. It comprises of welcome dinner and breakfast. Firstly, welcome embraces the refreshments after you reach the arrival destination, Kathmandu. Secondly, you can enjoy the traditional Nepali cuisine that is a blend of rice, lentils, vegetables, and pickle. We respect and provide the choice of vegetarian or non-vegetarian food. Lastly, breakfast consists of organic tea or fresh plump of organic fruits. You are given a choice of a range of bakeries and cookies. Breakfasts are only provided in the city tours.

The trip excludes lunch and dinner so that you can explore the multiple choices of cuisines in Nepal without being bound by the travel agency. However, you can choose meals according to your preferences excluding the provision at your own expense.

Nepal Big Mountain also provides a provision of lunch and dinner for the minimum amount of extra USD 25 per person per day for city tours. In addition to it, during the trekking period, for the prerequisites of breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the minimum amount of extra USD 40 per person per day is provided such that you have the convenience of easy access to meals throughout the trek.

Physical Condition & Experience Requirements

The traveller must specify any kinds of sickness, diseases or phobias before the trip because Nepal Big Mountain believes every traveller needs to be under perfect care and guidance to enjoy the trip with the best convenience possible.

There are high chances of altitude sickness to many trekkers since the trek covers the altitude of 5106m. Along with it, there is a need for the trekkers to be familiar with the cold weather. It is essential for the trekkers to have the common vaccinations. If there are any children travelling, it must be on the guidance of their guardian.

The trip is not suitable for pregnant women and people with an adverse health condition.  For children who are under 14-15, it is best to hire porters to carry the heavier equipment, since the children will not be able to manage the heavy loads over rough terrain, and you do not want to have to carry all their stuff as well as your own. The same can be said of elderly people, over sixty may be able to make the long trek, but they need to be physically fit and have no serious conditions.

Best Time to Travel

Deciding the best season depends on your convenience. The seasons are autumn from September- October, winter from December-February, spring from March-May and summer from June-August. You can choose your comfortable season for the trek.

However, September-November and March-May are the best months for trekking. The choice of these months will provide you with the necessary clear views of the mountain ranges without any difficulty. The climate is also suitable as it is not too hot or too cold. The trail will welcome you with the blooming rhododendrons, meadows in their best forms. The wildlife and vegetation also amaze you the most in these seasons.

Additional Information

You will go through the centre of the earthquake of 2015, Barpak. You will visit the remote areas of the Manaslu Base Camp and get a chance to visit the Rupina La Pass as well as Larke La pass.

Tips are also expected from the trekker if satisfactory performance is shown by the tour guide.
