Day 03: Sightseeing in Paro
Day 4: Departure from Paro
Upon arrival at Paro, NBM representatives will greet you and transfer you to our private vehicle to drive to Thimphu. It will take around an hour to arrive in Thimpu on the drive. The breathtaking view of Paro valley and surrounding mountains keeps you enticed throughout the driveway.
After arriving at Thimpu, you will check into a luxury hotel, where you can refresh and rest to get rid of tiredness due to the early morning flight. At lunchtime, you will have your lunch in the hotel itself and get ready for sightseeing in the town. You will visit the following amazing sites today.
At the main Paro-Thimphu highway, Tachogang Lhakhang is an arty-crafty monastery in the Paro district. Thankthong Gyelpo built the monastery after a vision of Guru Rimpocchhe, Amitaba, and Avalokiteshvara near the site. Today, descendants of Thangtong Gyalpo look after the monastery’s welfare. The key highlight of the temple is the master’s relics, alongside his walking stick.
H.M. Jigme, Bhutan’s third king built the National Memorial Chorten to represent world peace and prosperity. Unfortunately, he was unable to complete a monument in his lifetime. The Royal Family and Cabinet gave shape to his idea later in Jigme’s memory after his untimely demise in 1972. Today, the monument represents eternal peace and harmony.
Exploring the monument provides you with a sense of tranquility and delights you with its charming and colorful architecture.
At the northern edge of Thimphu, The Tashichho Dzong is a fortress and a typical Buddhist monastery on the bank of the Wang Chu River. The Dzong was historically used to be the seat of the Dharma Raja of Bhutan. Today, it serves as the seat of the Bhutanese government. The key highlight of Tashichho Dzong is the throne room and the offices of the king. The vibrant garden with beautiful flower species and manicured lawns on the site also adds to its beauty.
Stay overnight in a luxury hotel in Thimphu.
You will start your day by relishing breakfast. Today, you will visit the beautiful statues in the city of Thimphu, before driving back to Paro in the evening.
We will begin our second day by visiting Kuensel Phodrang, which is also popular as the Buddha point. The massive statue of Buddha standing at a height of 169 feet is the world’s largest Buddha statue. Inside the statue, you will witness hundreds and thousands of beautifully crafted smaller Buddha statues. Additionally, you will have an opportunity to enjoy the mesmerizing panoramic views of the city from the top.
Next, we will visit the Motithang Takin Preserve, which is a wildlife reserve that is home to Bhutan’s national animal – the takin.
Motithang Takin Preserve was originally built as a mini zoo before it was transformed into a preserve for Takin. The preserve was once shut down to set the animals free, however, Takins were not ready to leave the place. So, it was reopened again.
Visiting the reserve, you will have the opportunity to observe these majestic animals up close and learn about their unique behavior and creation.
Our next destination for the day is Zilukha Nunnery, also popular as Zilukha Anim Dratshang is yet another wonderful Buddhist monastery in the country. Built-in 1976, the monastery is located in Zilukha and is home to over 60 nuns.
Visiting this peaceful and serene monastery provides you with an opportunity to learn about the daily life of Bhutan’s monastic community.
In the afternoon, you’ll drive back to Paro.
Upon arriving at Paro, you will visit Rinpung Dzong, which is also known as the Paro Dzong. The impressive fortress-monastery is one of the best Dzong architecture in the world. Visiting this iconic landmark offers a glimpse of Bhutanese architecture with intricate woodwork and art.
Stay overnight in a luxury hotel in Paro.
Once again, we will start our journey by relishing breakfast in the luxury hotel before embarking on our journey to exceptional sites in Paro – Tiger’s Nest and Kyichu Lhakhang.
After breakfast, the tour starts with a visit to one of the most iconic landmarks in Bhutan known as the Tiger’s Nest Monastery. You will arrive at the base of the monastery on the drive, and from there you will hike up. It takes around 2 to 3 hours to arrive at the top. You will walk through challenging steep ascents, but the stunning view and beautiful environment you get in the monastery make you forget all your tiredness. The monastery standing as the pride of the nation is a must-visit place in the country for its stunning sight.
Our next destination for the day is Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest and most sacred temples in Bhutan. The temple was built in the 7th century AS by the Tibetan King Songsten Gampo to control a demon in the Himalayas.
Throughout its history, Kyichu Lhakhang got many additions to its structure. The QueenMother Ashi Kezang Choden made the last addition in 1965 when she added a new temple called the
Guru Lhakhang. The temple includes many important relics including highly valued Jowo Sakyamuni.
In addition, the key highlight of the temple is its beautiful architecture and intricate wood carvings that add beauty to the religious artifacts.
In the Evening you will explore the local market in Paro town before you rest your eyes in a luxury hotel in the town.
After an early morning breakfast, an NBM representative will drive you to Paro Airport. We will greet the final goodbye and wish luck with your next destination.
